Leno to retire from Tonight show

US comedian Jay Leno is to retire as host of the popular Tonight Show in five years time.

Offbeat comic Conan O'Brien will become the fifth host of the television institution in 2009. O'Brien, whose contract was to expire in December 2005, had been very public about his displeasure when NBC locked up Leno on the "Tonight Show" through the end of the decade. O'Brien made no bones about the fact that he thought he deserved the earlier time slot after 11 years following Leno. Soon, reports emerged that he was being wooed by other networks.

"NBC Late Night Succession Plan Announced: Jay Leno to turn over 'The Tonight Show' to Conan O'Brien in 2009," NBC boasted in its news release.

It quotes Leno as saying that in 2009 he will be 59 years old and will have had his "dream job" for 17 years.

Leno, 54, broke the news to viewers during a special programme on Monday to mark the 50th anniversary of The Tonight Show.

Leno took over the show in 1992 from legendary host Johnny Carson, who fronted the show for 30 years.

Long time 2009...but personally I can't stand Conan O brian...i think his sense of humour sucks...Jay we love you :)
